Overview

The Limi Valley trek is one of the remotest and most culturally extraordinary journeys in Nepal — a fully-camping circuit through Humla in the far north-west, along the old salt-trade route to Tibet. It visits the medieval Tibetan-Buddhist villages of the hidden Limi valley (Til, Halji and Jang) and the border at Hilsa, with views toward sacred Mount Kailash.

A restricted area requiring special permits, a guide and a minimum of two trekkers, it is reached by flights via Nepalgunj and Simikot. Lying largely in the rain shadow, it is also one of the few treks well-suited to the summer monsoon. Expect raw wilderness, ancient monasteries and a way of life almost untouched by the modern world.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Limi Valley trek cost in 2026?

Do I need a permit for the Limi Valley?

Yes. Humla is a restricted area requiring the Humla Restricted Area Permit (about USD 90 for the first 10 days), a licensed guide and a minimum of two trekkers. Independent trekking is not allowed.

How hard is the Limi Valley trek?

It is graded Strenuous — remote, long, with the Nyalu La around 4,940 m, basic camping conditions and no quick exits. Strong fitness and self-sufficiency are essential.
